Survey finds many single parents are uninsured

A survey released by Genworth Financial found that 69% of single parents with children still living at home are uninsured.  The research confirms that children of single parent homes are at greater risk to endure financial hardship if their sole provider were to pass away.  Single parents make up the highest percentage of uninsured Americans compared to 45% of married parents with children living at home.

The survey also discloses that single fathers with dependent children are more uninsured than single mothers, and the percentage of uninsured single parents does not radically decrease as income rises.

  • 79% of single men with dependent children, who are not single and uninsured Efinancialhomeowners, and earn an annual income of less than $50,000 are uninsured compared to 66% of women in the same category.
  • 79% of single men with dependent children, who are not homeowners, and earn an annual income between $50,000-250,000 are uninsured.
  • 56% of single women with dependent children, who are not homeowners, and earn an annual income of more than $250,000 are uninsured.

As a single parent, you might be too busy balancing the challenges of work and running a household to think about buying life insurance. Or, if you are like most, you don’t want to think about what may happen in the event of your death—an understandable fear since you are the sole person making your family’s financial decisions. The responsibilities of raising and protecting your family are on your shoulders alone, but life insurance can help make sure that your children will be financially cared for if anything were to happen to you.

Efinancial can help you find the protection for the people who are counting on you. Visit www.efinancial.com to learn more about the benefits of owning life insurance for your family.

5 Tips to Make Your Child Money Smart

Financial Responsibility, Children, Term Life Insurance, EfinancialPart of preparing your children for their next stage in life is to inspire a sense of financial responsibility. Before your children are out on their own, you should talk with your children about handling money wisely and prepare them for the financial decisions they will have to make as adults. Here are some topics to discuss with your teenager so that he or she has a solid foundation for financial decision-making.

1.   Understand the difference between needs and wants – Make sure your child knows that the most important purchases are taken care of first. Goods and services not essential to maintaining a decent lifestyle are acquired after needs are met.

2.   Become a saver – Teach your child that saving a portion of available resources is essential to financial success and gives him or her the ability to pull funds in case of emergencies or for use later in life.

3.   Be responsible with your credit – Don’t let your child be deceived by the ease of buying items with no money out of pocket at the time of purchase. Teach your child that credit purchases ultimately impact available funds—you should only charge what you can afford.

4.   Beware little purchases – On big ticket items you are more likely to think before you spend, but for those small daily purchases, you don’t always think about it. Show your child how much he or she would actually spend on a daily latte or any little extra item. Those small items seem okay by themselves, but they add up over time.

5.   Always track your finances – Teach your child how to create a budget and stick with it for the long run. A budget shows where money is coming from, how much is there, and where it is all going—knowledge which affects your child’s spending habits.

Every financial lesson you provide gives your child the confidence to make the right decisions about his or her finances. By empowering your teenager to make informed choices now, you set him or her up to have financial success in the future.

-- A big advantage you can give to your children is to give them some extra protection. Efinancial can help you find a life insurance policy which offers a lifetime of financial security.
